Downtown bike racks get International recognition

IPFW Sculpture with Purpose Bike Racks

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  An international association recognized the City of Fort Wayne and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW)  for its contribution to beautifying the city’s downtown.

“IPFW’s Sculpture with Purpose truly deserves this international recognition,” Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said. “The sculptural bike racks are something generations of Fort Wayne residents will appreciate and enjoy.”

The International Downtown Association (IDA) honored Fort Wayne with a Merit Award for the IPFW Sculpture with Purpose project that transformed art into an accessible sculptures to be used as a bike rack.

“IPFW Sculpture with Purpose demonstrates the lasting connection between our campus, our city, and the whole northeast Indiana community,” IPFW Chancellor Vicky Carwein said. “We are honored and pleased that the project received this award.”

All applicants submitted their project with information on how it offers a unique approach to a downtown management or developmental challenge. The project was initiated to celebrate IPFW’s 50th anniversary and included the installation of 50 sculptural bike racks throughout downtown and the IPFW campus.
