Mother charged with neglect after huffing incident

ANGOLA, Ind. (WANE)- A Steuben County woman is charged with neglect of a dependent after police said she put her daughter in serious danger over the summer.

According to NewsChannel 15’s news partners at KPC Media, court documents show Lacey Jo Gaul, 27, blacked out after huffing a cleaning product back in June. Her 4-year-old daughter was with her at the time.

While Gaul was passed out, the daughter started playing in traffic. In fact, several motorists said they almost hit the child in a North Wayne Street parking lot.

Police then showed up and said Gaul admitted to “huffing again.” Gaul told police she had wrecked her vehicle because of huffing.

She told police she walked from her home to buy a can of electronic duster with the last of her money, stopped in a grassy area under a tree in the lot to smoke a cigarette and allegedly could not resist the urge to inhale the spray.

An investigation followed and the Steuben County prosecutor decided to press charges against Gaul for neglect. Police just arrested her Monday.

Her trial date has been set for November 20.
