INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent tackle Jamon Meredith to the active roster and tackle Reid Fragel to the practice squad. The team also placed tackle Xavier Nixon on Injured Reserve/Designated for Return, released tackle Tyler Hoover from the practice squad and released running back Deji Karim from Injured Reserve with an injury settlement.
Meredith, 6-5, 312 pounds, has played in 47 career games (24 starts) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-13), Pittsburgh Steelers (2011), New York Giants (2010) and Buffalo Bills (2009-2010). He has started at both tackle and guard in his career. In 2013, Meredith played in a career-high 16 games, making eight starts. In 2012, he started a career-high 12 games, as he helped the Buccaneers set team single-season records in points scored (389) and total net yards (5,820). Meredith was originally selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of the University of South Carolina.
Fragel, 6-8, 308 pounds, was originally selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the seventh round (240th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He was signed to the Cleveland Browns active roster from the Bengals practice squad on October 29, 2013 and was waived on August 30, 2014. Fragel played in all 51 games at Ohio State from 2009-2012, making 21 starts. For his first three seasons, he played tight end and caught 14 career passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. Fragel moved to right tackle his senior year under Head Coach Urban Meyer and started all 12 games, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades.
Nixon was first signed by the Colts from the Washington Redskins practice squad on September 24, 2013. He played in four games for the Colts in the 2013 regular season, making one start at left guard in a Week 16 victory at Kansas City. He also saw action in both postseason contests. Nixon was originally signed by the Redskins as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2013 out of the University of Florida.
Hoover was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2014 and was signed to the practice squad on August 31. He played in 48 career games (23 starts) at Michigan State and recorded 93 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Karim was signed by the Colts as a free agent on August 18, 2014 and was placed on Injured Reserve on August 26. He has appeared in 33 games over his four-year NFL career, recording 110 rushes for 341 yards and 18 receptions for 129 yards. He also has returned 91 kickoffs for 2,332 yards (25.6 avg.) and one touchdown.
