TinCaps clinch playoff spot on VanMeter’s clutch home run

BOWLING GREEN, Kent. (WANE) – Norwell graduate Josh VanMeter’s three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning not only was the big hit in a 4-0 win against Bowling Green but allowed the TinCaps to clinch a playoff berth for the sixth season in a row.

The Caps went into the final game of the regular season in control of their own destiny. A win against the Hot Rods and Fort Wayne would clinch a playoff spot.

With the game scoreless in the seventh VanMeter stepped to the plate with two on and two out. The Ossian native then crushed a pitch off the right field scoreboard for a three-run blast – his third home run of the season.

The TinCaps added a run in the ninth while four Fort Wayne pitchers combined for a shutout, scattering five hits in the process.

The TinCaps will now face West Michigan in a best-of-three first round playoff series. The TinCaps host the Whitecaps for game one Wednesday night at 8:05 p.m. The series then shifts to West Michigan for game two on Thursday and game three, if necessary, on Friday.
