Tour to focus on historic downtown neighborhood

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Members of a downtown neighborhood, home to buildings dating back to the 1830s, are giving an inside look at its history.

The West Central Neighborhood, located on Berry, Wayne and Washington Streets, is on the local and national historic registers.

It was first home to the working class who could walk to their jobs, according to the West Central Neighborhood Association. Once transportation improved, the area became popular for the middle and upper class.

The architecture styles of the homes range from the Greek Revival to the Gothic Revival style.

The neighborhood association is putting on a Home & Garden Tour and ArtFest. The community can enjoy tours of gardens, historic homes and buildings and performing artists.

The Home & Garden Tour starts Saturday, September 6 and ends Sunday, September 7.
