Driver in I-469 crash identified

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The man killed after his car his car crashed through a barrier and landed upside-down on I-469 on Wednesday has been identified as Ricky Gene Richhart, 51, of New Haven.

According to officers on the scene, Richhart was driving Parent Road, which dead-ends just west of I-469 at the 22 mile marker. Richhart crashed through the barrier in his S10 pick-up truck, hit an embankment and then flipped over before landing in a southbound lane of I-469. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Richhart was not wearing a seat belt.

According to the Allen County Coroner, Richhart died from blunt force trauma. His death is the 17th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2014.

No other cars on I-469 were affected in the single-vehicle crash.

The accident happened at about 2:35 p.m. and as of 4:30 p.m., both lanes had reopened to traffic after being shut down. The northbound lanes were not affected.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.
