INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man has been charged with murder after he admitted to repeatedly beating his 4-year-old son, leading to his death over the weekend.

Police were called to a home in the 900 block of East 42nd Street shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday. A man called police saying his child took pills, was unconscious and not breathing. The boy was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Court documents state the child suffered what appeared to be a number of blunt force traumatic injuries over his entire body.

Detectives spoke with the child’s father, 29-year-old Dennis Price, who made the initial call to police. He told police that over the past few days, he “repeatedly whipped with a black belt and punched his son about the body and head to the point where he eventually began acting differently, lost consciousness and ultimately died,” court documents state.

Price told detectives he gave the child Ibuprofen to reduce the swelling he suffered after being punched and whipped and that he waited 10 or 15 minutes before calling 911. He also admitted to police that he tried to get the child to vomit by putting a charcoal briquette in a cup of water because he said he had overdosed on the Ibuprofen.

Detectives went back to the home and recovered a bottle of Ibuprofen and three belts. Child detectives also spoke with Price’s 4-year-old daughter who witnessed the beating.

Price has been charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and battery resulting in death of a person less than 14 years of age.
