FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man is in custody after police surrounded an apartment complex for more than three hours Sunday.

The man who barricaded himself at Orchard Place Apartments in the 900 block of Cook Road at 5:16 a.m is not expected to face charges.

According to city police spokesperson Officer Jason Anthony, officers were called to the complex after a report of a man breaking windows out of his apartment. When police arrived, they heard what appeared to be gunshots from inside the apartment.

When dispatch spoke with the subject, the man said he was having suicidal thoughts, according to Anthony. Officers repeatedly asked the man to leave the building and speak with officers, but he refused.

After about thirty minutes, the Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist. A negotiator spoke with the man on the phone for several hours until he agreed to exit the apartment.

Officers said when they took the man into custody around 8:30 a.m., he did not struggle. Police said no one was inside the apartment while police were there. The man was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Police believe the man may have been off his medication and are still investigating the incident.
