“Fill the Boot” campaign sets new record

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – For three days, Fort Wayne firefighters were stationed at busy intersections around the city with boots in hand and this year’s “Fill the Boot” campaign brought in record donations.

fill the bootFor 60 years, firefighters have used the “Fill the Boot” campaign to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year Fort Wayne firefighters collected $113,233, beating last year’s record of $98,000.

The money helps support the MDA’s various programs, mda fill the bootincluding research, health care services, and camps for kids.

People can still support the cause until Thursday by contacting Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Local 124.

The MDA is also the world leader in ALS research, which is the disease behind the Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping the Internet.

Saturday, the Executive Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Northern Indiana Ashley Zumstein along with St. Joe Township firefighters took the challenge. Not only were they doused with ice water, they stood under the stream of a fire hose. You can see it in the video in this story.
