FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men’s soccer team fell in an exhibition match against Xavier 1-0, during the Shindigz National Soccer Festival on Saturday afternoon, held at Carroll High School due to unplayable fields at the Fort Wayne Soccer Club.
The ‘Dons were unable to convert on their chances, as Jacob Murphy and Britt Watts each earned two shots on goal during the match. In the 11th minute, Murphy weaved through the Musketeer defense, getting a shot off to the lower left side of the Musketeer net. However, Xavier goalkeeper Vince Shaw made a diving stop to avoid the threat.
IPFW’s best chance came late in the game as Murphy and Watts each had shots in the final 10 minutes. In the 83rd minute, Watts fired the ball from the left side, but Shaw was able to turn it away, giving the Mastodons a corner kick. Corey Tom‘s corner flew into the box, but was headed away by a Musketeer defender.
Watts once again had a chance late in the match, as he got a shot off with 22 seconds remaining in regulation, but once again being saved by Xavier’s Shaw.
The Musketeers earned the game-winning goal from Owen Steinwall in the 13th minute. Steinwall received a pass from Jalen Brown, breaking through the defense, and beating Cody Schweitzer on the right side.
The Mastodons and Musketeers split the shots in the first half with two each, while Xavier earned two saves and a corner kick in the first 45 minutes. For the game IPFW edged Xavier 9-8 in shots, and earned a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks over the Musketeers. Raphael Kotzock made two saves in the second half for the Mastodons, while Xavier’s Shaw earned four saves during the match.
IPFW opens its regular season at home against St. Joseph’s (Ind.). The match is set to begin at 7 p.m., at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
