FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  After 29 years working with Animal Care & Control, Peggy Bender is retiring. Friday August 22, the mayor of Fort Wayne proclaimed it Peggy Bender Day in honor of her dedication and service to the community. Anyone was invited to say thank you to Bender during a farewell reception at Animal Care & Control Friday.

Bender was the Community Relations and Education Specialist at the shelter as well as the face of NewsChannel 15’s Pet of the Week segment. While working at Animal Care & Control, Bender established many outreach programs for the department including fundraising events and numerous animal education programs for children and teens.

“I was reading various quotes recently, and I came across one that I thought really summed up what I feel,” Bender said. “And it said how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. And really that is how I feel.”

Bender said she plans to stay connected to the shelter by doing some video production work and serving on the Humane Education Advisory Council. Bender’s retirement officially starts September 1.
