Luers Grad Smith Looking To Expand Role In 2014

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) – In just one year Bishop Luers graduate Jaylon Smith has seen his status rise from freshman linebacker battling for starting spot to arguably the best player on Notre Dame’s defense.
Smith, a preseason second team All-America pick by Sports Illustrated, started all 13 games last year as a true freshman. Smith tallied 67 tackles, including 6.5 for loss – second best on the team.
The linebacker will be asked to line up inside more frequently in new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder’s defensive alignment.
Notre Dame opens the 2014 season August 30 at home against Rice. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
