In September 2013, fire officials said they had not determined the cause of the fire but had ruled out foul play. Jim Murua with the Fort Wayne Fire Department said at that time that investigators spent days combing through the debris on Herbert Street. Police interviewed witnesses and people who called 911 and were able to determine that the fire started on the southeast side of the complex.
