Inside The Zone – Week One Preview

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Friday night football is just days away and The News-Sentinel sports writer Justin Kenny and WANE sports director Glenn Marini break down the area’s top week one match ups in an all new edition of “Inside The Zone.”
There will be a huge battle in the SAC on Friday as Snider hosts Bishop Luers. The Panthers beat Luers 34-12 last year as Snider went on to finish 9-3 while Luers went 2-10. Snider has won the last two meetings between the two programs with Luers winning in 2011 and 2010.
Elsewhere in the SAC Bishop Dwenger will host South Side at Zollner Stadium. The Saints have won 13 in a row against South Side, but the Archers have made it close recently. Dwenger won 24-14 last fall, 20-7 in 2012, and 24-6 in 2011. It will be the debut of former Northrop standout and ex-Elmhurst coach Roosevelt Norfleet at South.
At Chambers Field the defending SAC champion North Side Redskins will host a Concordia team that won a school-record nine games last year. North won a tight contest 26-19 last fall against the Cadets. Concordia will be looking to replace record-setting quarterback David Morrison (now playing at Ball State) while Arion Nieves takes over at QB for North Side.
Outside of the SAC a rivalry will be renewed at Dave S. Walter Memorial Stadium when Homestead hosts Huntington North. The Spartans have won eight in a row over the Vikings, including a 37-28 victory last season.
In Monroeville the Heritage Patriots (7-4 last season) will host a New Haven team coming off an NHC chamionship and an 11-2 record. Last year the Bulldogs beat the Patriots 61-21, but the Pats return a number of key players including quarterback Branson Dossen and running back Justyn Hart.
Norwell travels to Leo in another key non-conference battle. The Lions have won six in a row against the Knights, including a 42-6 win last year en route to a 10-1 overall record. Norwell went 6-6 last season, but return key players in quarterback Piercen Harnish, tight end Jeremy Davis, and receiver Reggie Hayes.
Tune into WANE-TV for coverage of these games and more this Friday as the Highlight Zone celebrates a 20th season!
