STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) One man is in the hospital after a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning, according to the police report. Investigators said, after 3 a.m. a Chevrolet Trailblazer was driving on Nevada Mills Road by Jimmerson Lake and failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and collided with trees.
Police said when they arrived, they found two Fort Wayne residents, Steve Johnston, 47, and Bret Jeremy Asselin, 28, standing outside the SUV with injuries to the face and head. The men told police they were in the vehicle but an unknown person had been driving and ran away.
An officer with the Orland Police Department brought a K-9 to track the unknown driver. However, police said they noticed evidence at the scene indicating that Johnston had been driving the vehicle. The K-9 found no scent indicating that anyone had fled from the SUV.
Johnson was transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne. Asselin refused medical treatment, and was placed in custody at the scene for an unrelated charge.
The incident is under investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and alcohol is believed to be a factor.
