FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A jury convicted a Fort Wayne woman of neglect on Friday.

Police said that on May 10, 2013, Angela Beck left her son with her boyfriend Gregory Higgins II while the boyfriend was sleeping. When he woke up, the boyfriend said he found the toddler on the stairway unresponsive and not breathing.

The then 15-month-old was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors at Saint Joe Hospital said he had bleeding in his forehead area and a shift in his brain from accumulating fluid. This head injury was life-threatening and doctors said that het boy may have died had he not received immediate care. They also said the boy had both new and old bruises that weren’t consistent with falling down stairs. Some bruises on the boy’s scalp looked like individual finger marks, leading doctor’s to believe the child had been grabbed on either side of his head, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

Gregory Higgins pleaded guilty to neglect earlier this year. Angela Beck will be sentenced on September 4.
