FORT WAYNE, IN. (WANE) – Losing one Tranquil brother is bad enough. Losing two? Let’s put it this way – Carroll will have its work cut out this fall. With Drue Tranquil beginning his career at Notre Dame and younger brother Justin lost for his senior season with a torn ACL, the Chargers finals run through the NHC will be without two of the areas most explosive players from a year ago.
Head coach Doug Dinan will lean on a veteran offensive line that returns five starters including all-conference tackle Blake Yager. That group will not only pave the way for a new set of running backs, but be tasked with protecting a new quarterback as well. With the graduation of Chandler Boggs, the battle for the starting job is down to Cody Dinan and Aiden Smith – both juniors. Smith is already being coveted by several Division 1 programs, but as the coach’s son, few players know Carroll’s offense better than Dinan.
The Chargers return seven starters to a defense that allowed less than 250 total yards of offense per game last season. Seniors Seth Johnson and Chase Blotkamp will anchor the defensive line, while Luke Brunner and Dylan Connor return to the linebacking corp.
Carroll will scrimmage North Side next Friday before opening the season August 22nd at Goshen.
