FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A Fort Wayne father found guilty of molesting his son for six years will go to prison for 12 years.

Matthew S. Shirley was sentenced to 20 years on Thursday after pleading guilty to multiple counts of felony child molesting. Twelve years will be spent in prison with eight years suspended. After serving his time in prison, Shirley will be on probation for five years.

Police began their investigation into Shirley in July 2013 after the victim told his 15-year-old brother that “his dad was touching him.” The brother told an adult friend who then told the boys’ mother. The victim’s mother contacted police about the molestation on July 21, 2013.

According to court documents, the last time Shirley molested his son was when he was 12 years old.

The victim told police in an interview that he could not remember how old he was when his father touched him sexually for the first time, but he knew he was old enough to walk and talk.

Police said the victim told them his dad raped and molested him from January 2007 to July 2013. Shirley told his son not to tell anyone, according to court documents.
