Dwenger Working For Return Trip To State In 2014

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – After making the program’s eighth trip to a state title game last fall the Bishop Dwenger football team hit the practice field Monday determined to make it to Indianapolis yet again.
Last fall the Saints earned a state runner-up finish, falling to Columbus East 28-27 in the 4A title game to end the 2013 campaign with an 11-4 record. 12 seniors off last year’s team are now playing college football, including quarterback Mike Fiacable (Air Force) and Ryan Watercutter (Indiana). Key returnees for the Saints include defensive end Sam Schenkel, running back/linebacker Marcus Stepp, and linemen David Peters and Jackson Grahovac. Senior Cody Miller – who threw for over 1,300 yards as a sophomore in 2012 – also gives the Saints experience at quarterback, a position where Schenkel could see playing time. Linebacker/running back Andrew Gabet and running back Peyton Philpot are also expected to play bigger roles in 2014.
The Saints will scrimmage Bishop Luers next Friday at USF’s Bishop D’Arcy Stadium. Dwenger opens the regular season Friday, August 22 at Zollner Stadium against South Side.
