Man crashes into drain under I-69 in Steuben Co.

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)  Indiana State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash that hospitalized a man from Angola, Sunday at 6 a.m.

Nathan L. West, 25, was traveling on I-69 northbound in Steuben County when his Jeep traveled off the side of the roadway and down into a drain under the road. His jeep hit a sign and then a concrete wall, according to the police report.

Police said West was not wearing a seat belt at the time. He suffered a broken leg and a head injury. West was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne.

Police believe he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Police also believe alcohol to be a factor in the crash.

West is in the hospital in fair condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
