STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A man crashed his car after trying to avoid hitting someone alerting traffic on the side of the road, according to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.
Edward Duncan, 49, was driving a vehicle with a utility trailer on CR 100 N near CR 600 W Friday night. He told police that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer that ran into the road. The trailer became detached from the vehicle when he avoided the collision.
Investigators said that Duncan was putting the trailer back onto the hitch at the bottom of a hill while his passenger, Kenetha Duncan, 46, was alerting oncoming traffic.
Daniel Shroyer, 41, was driving over the hill and swerved to avoid hitting Kenetha Duncan, according to the sheriff’s department. Shroyer lost control of his vehicle and went off the road causing the car to roll several times.
He and his passenger, Deanna Shroyer, were ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at an Angola Hospital. Daniel Shroyer was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne with non-life threatening injuries.
Edward and Kenetha Duncan were not injured.
Investigators believe that alcohol is a factor in the crash, but it still under investigation.
