GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Police arrested a former Sweetser Town Marshal on Thursday on two official misconduct charges.

According to Indiana State Police, officers received information that Chris Tarlton, 33, of Marion, gave false information when buying a handgun for an acquaintance. Police said Tarlton lied, saying the acquaintance was a police officer, so he could get the discounted law enforcement rate for the gun.

During the investigation, police also found out Tarlton asked a Sweetser man to smoke marijuana so Tarlton could perform a required drug recognition expert exam on him. Tarlton was certified as a drug recognition expert (DRE) so he was required to complete two exams every year, according to ISP.

Officails said Indiana standards do not require a person to be high or over medicated in order for exams to be conducted for certification and exams should always be conducted in a controlled environment.

Tarlton was preliminary charged with two class D felony counts of official misconduct. On Friday, he was listed in the Grant County Jail with a bond of $6,000. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
