VAN WERT COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Three people were injured in a vehicle crash on US 127 Wednesday evening.

Scott Cowling, 17, was driving eastbound on Wren Landeck Road when he didn’t stop at the stop sign at US 127, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Officials said Cowling continued into the intersection and his vehicle was struck on the passenger side by an SUV driven by Susan Applegate, 64.

Cowling’s vehicle kept going on the east side of the road where it flipped over and came to a stop on its roof.

Police said Applegate’s vehicle kept moving off the east side of the road before stopping in a cornfield.

Cowling and Applegate were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Van Wert.

Jeffrey Applegate, a passenger in the SUV, was first taken to the same hospital, but was later airlifted by Samaritan Medical Transport to Fort Wayne.

Investigators don’t believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

They say all three people were wearing seatbelts. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
