FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A 21-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.

Christopher Eugene Burcham’s death is the 12th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2014.

Police were called out to the accident around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday. According to Fort Wayne Police Department spokesperson Michael Joyner, Burcham was on a motorcycle heading east on East State just west of Bolton Street at a high rate of speed when he pulled up on the handlebars to perform a wheelie.

The motorcycle can be seen lying on its side several feet from the truck that caught fire.

A truck heading west on East State turned left into a KFC restaurant and that’s when the motorcycle came down, striking the gas tank of the truck, causing it to explode into flames.  Two people inside the truck were able to get out safely without any injuries.  The motorcycle broke into several pieces upon impact and the truck was destroyed.

Fire crews were called to put out the flames which produced smoke that billowed dozens of feet into the air. East State was closed for about three hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

Initially dispatchers indicated Burcham was in critical condition, however medics declared him dead at the scene. Burcham was not wearing a helmet.
