GARY, Ind. (WANE) Police have identified a Gary man who died while walking along an interstate Friday evening. Police said the man identified as Charles J. Maguire, 55, was hit by a vehicle in Lake County when he was walking on I-80, east of the Clark Street overpass.

According to the police report, around 11:30 p.m. a woman driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox was headed east on I-80 when the passenger in her car yelled that there was someone walking out in front of their vehicle. The Northville, Michigan woman swerved and braked but could not avoid hitting Maguire. When the woman pulled over the man was in the left lane and ran over by several other unknown vehicles.

Police believe Maguire was walking the east bound lanes north to south before he was hit. It took police approximately four hours to clear the interstate.

This incident is still under investigation.
