Scholarship starts in honor of Bishop Dwenger student

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)  Community members came together this morning at Bishop Dwenger High School to share steps of strength for their fallen Dwenger Saint, Haley Nellum, who was hit and killed by a drunk driver at the end of March. From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, people showed their support by walking 2.1 miles around the school’s track in honor of Haley’s basketball jersey number which was 21.

“The support for Haley as a family and as a group from all of these people is phenomenal,” Laura Nellum, Haley’s mother, said. “I don’t think I’d be doing as well as I am if it weren’t for these people.”

She said events such as this helps with her and her youngest daughter’s healing process as well as talking about Haley.

“We laugh about things that we did together, and we look at pictures,” Nellum said. “We do a lot of spending time together just thinking about Haley.”

The walk was also a fundraiser for the scholarship set up in Haley’s name. The event was organized by Students Against Destructive Decisions.  The group hope to raise awareness of the danger of drunk driving. All donations collected will go towards the Haley Nellum Scholarship. Donations can be sent to Bishop Dwenger, indicated for the Haley Nellum Scholarship.
