Police: Men in Van Wert shooting fled on ATVs

VAN WERT, Ohio (WANE) – A man was found injured after a fight with a group of men on  4-wheel ATV’s led to an apparent shooting. The reported shooting happened in the area of Lincoln Highway and U.S. 30 on Thursday evening and the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department is asking the public for help in their investigation into the incident.

According to the press release, officers responded to a call around 11:20 p.m. from a man who said he was being confronted by a group of people east of Van Wert. When deputies arrived, they found the man who had called injured.

The victim told officers the group had fled on what he believed were 4-wheels ATV’s. The victim was taken to a hospital and later released. The release from the Sheriff’s department did not state the extent of his injuries.

Officers believe a weapon was fired by one or more men who confronted the victim. Police think robbery may have been a motive but are still looking into other reasons for the shooting.

The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone who may have seen or heard 4-wheel ATV activity or any other suspicious activity in the surrounding area of Lincoln Highway and U.S. 30 on Thursday night to call the Sheriff’s Department at (419) 328-3866.
