MUNCIE, Ind. – Jahwan Edwards, a senior on the 2014 Ball State football team, has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List for the honor that goes to college football’s most outstanding running back.

“Jahwan Edwards is a success story that everyone associated with college football can appreciate,” said Ball State head football coach Pete Lembo. “Despite a highly productive high school career, he was not highly recruited. He took a chance and came 10 hours away from home because he believed in our coaching staff and wanted the opportunity to play in the Football Bowl Subdivision. His commitment, passion and work ethic are tremendous. Jahwan has made an impact on the field since the first game of his freshman year – a win over Indiana. He has improved as a student and has developed as a leader. We are very proud of his progress.”

A 2013 All-Mid-American Conference Second Team selection, Edwards set the Ball State career record for rushing touchdowns and career total touchdowns with 39 through three seasons. He has seven games with three rushing TDs and eight career games with multiple touchdowns.

This marks the second straight season Edwards has been on the Doak Walker Watch List, and comes a year after rushing for 1,110 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2013. Edwards has rushed for 3,306 yards in his career, which ranks fourth on the Cardinals’ career chart. He became only the sixth player in Ball State history to rush for 3,000 or more yards in a career and needs 697 rushing yards to set the school’s career rushing mark.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists Nov. 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced Nov. 24. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.

The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Dec. 11, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2015.

The award, in its 25th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
