Texts to 911 now work in Steuben County

Before you text, voice is best

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)- Steuben County is now providing the public with access to 911 through the use of text messaging, officials announced Thursday.

The service started Thursday, officials announced in a news release, saying “public safety has taken a major move forward.”

INdigital telecom of Fort Wayne designed, built and operates the IN911 network for the State 911 Board, which provides service to Steuben County and 911 agencies throughout the state.

Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint are the first carriers to provide the text-to-911 service in Steuben County.

AT&T has vowed to provide the service, though it is not ready to do so yet.

The Federal Communications Commission wants all other wireless carriers to provide the text-to-911 service by the end of the year.
