Luers Grad Smith On Nagurski Trophy Watch List

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WANE) – Bishop Luers grad Jaylon Smith was one of three Notre Dame players named to national award watch lists on Thursday.
Smith was named to the Nagurski Trophy watch list that goes to the nation’s best defensive player at the end of the season. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell was also named to the Nagurski watch list while Sheldon Day was named to the Outland Trophy watch list (best interior lineman).
Last fall Smith became the first Notre Dame freshman linebacker to start a season opener since 1995. He started every game in 2013 and racked up 67 tackles – third-best on the team. His 6.5 tackles for lost were second-best among Notre Dame players.
