FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Employees and guests at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo got a big surprise Wednesday morning as a wildebeest gave birth in the zoo’s African Savannah area.
Zoo officials said they were tipped off by a visitor’s Facebook post at 10:18 a.m., which was just minutes after the delivery.
At this point, workers don’t know the gender of the calf but said he or she weighs around 25 pounds.
As expected, the calf stood and began walking and nursing shortly after delivery, which took about 30 minutes.
The baby’s father died of terminal cancer back in November.
This birth gives the zoo a total of four wildebeests. Prior to Wednesday, the last one was born in 2011.
