FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man accused of punching another man in the face and then shooting him twice is now facing a formal charge.

The Allen County Prosecutor filed a felony aggravated battery charge against Curtis Haywood.

Witnesses told police that Haywood got out of a car on Winter Street early Monday morning, walked up to Terrel Vernon, who was on the sidewalk, and punched him in the face. Haywood is then accused of pulling out a black handgun and shooting Vernon in the hip and stomach.

Police got a 911 about the shooting at about 2:30 a.m. after Vernon knocked on a door at a nearby house and asked for help.

Medics took Vernon to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

About 30 minutes later, police pulled over the car Haywood was driving and took him into custody. Police found a stolen 9mm Glock in the car, which matched the casings found at the scene of the shooting.
