BBB issues IRS phone call alert

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued an alert regarding phone calls claiming to be from the IRS to residents in northern Indiana.

The calls are coming from the 202 area code, which is Washington, D.C., with various messages that have panicked people on the other end. The caller claims the person is in trouble for not paying income taxes for several years and in order to avoid being put in jail, they must volunteer their checking account information.

According to the BBB, the calls being reported are not identical. Some people are being told that they will be served court papers. Other calls are reported to have come from the Federal Financial Litigation, etc. The one common thread of all of the calls is that bank account information is requested and that persons are being accused of failure to pay taxes.

The IRS would never call in this fashion. Threatening jail time or law suits via phone by any organization is an offense reportable to the Federal Trade Commission (877-382-4357). Any pending, legitimate, legal action will come by mail courier and will not request bank account information. The BBB asks anyone who has concerns regarding the IRS to call them at 800-829-1040.
