FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called out to a house fire on Cass Street before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

A mother and child were able to get out safely before fire crews arrived.

On Tuesday, crews could be seen on the roof of the home in the 1500 block as smoke poured out of the home. Damage could be seen on the home’s exterior, on the upper level in the front of the home.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control in 12 minutes but the home was heavily damaged.

Firefighters determined the fire started on the first floor and had extended up the outside through an open window up to the roof. Damage to a close-by neighbor home was limited to the home’s exterior.

On Wednesday, the Fort Wayne Fire Department determined the fire had been started by a “juvenile playing with a lighter.”
