State police issue holiday weekend travel tips

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- AAA Motor Club estimates millions of drivers will be out on the roads over the Independence Day holiday weekend. With that in mind, Indiana State Police have some tips to help keep you safe.

They suggest you prepare ahead of time, plan your travel route, and be ready for any emergencies that might happen along the way.

Troopers also said they’ll be doing extra patrols over the holiday to look for people who are speeding or not buckled up.

“It’s not about writing tickets. It’s about saving lives,” said Sergeant Ron Galaviz. “Every traffic stop that we make potentially could help save someone’s life and have a ripple effect throughout the motoring community. So that’s what it’s really all about.”

State troopers also urge you or your passenger to call police if you spot something potentially illegal on the roads. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
