GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — An Indianapolis suburb plans to rent bicycles for borrowers to ride along local trails beginning next spring.

The Johnson County Community Foundation is providing a nearly $4,000 grant to help Greenwood buy eight bikes. People will be able to borrow the bikes at the city’s community center and go for a ride on the area’s 20 miles of trails.

If the Greenwood program is successful, it may be expanded to nearby Franklin and the Daily Journal reports it could encourage the development of more trails.

The program is modeled after a similar system in downtown Indianapolis, but the larger city’s system has multiple sites at which to rent bikes.
