EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A woman convicted of killing Evansville’s former mayor in 1980 has died in prison.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that 69-year-old Julie Van Orden died Friday in the medical unit of the Indiana Women’s Prison in Indianapolis.

Van Orden was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 1982 in the shooting death of Russell Lloyd less than three months after he had left office as mayor.

She later spent several years in the state mental hospital in Logansport and in a group home in Merrillville.

She was found guilty but mentally ill of attempted murder for a 2006 attack in which a Logansport hospital attendant was stabbed 13 times. A judge then sentenced her to 50 years in prison.
