Moped driver killed in Noble Co. crash

AVILLA, Ind. (WANE) – A man crashed his moped south of Avilla on Baseline Road Thursday night, according to the Noble County Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to Baseline Road near County Road 900 East after a car struck a moped in the middle of the road.

A sheriff’s deputy told NewsChannel 15 they believe Jeffery M. Bogenschutz, 53, Garrett, was on the moped and possibly crashed about an hour prior to being found.

Investigators said skid marks on the road indicated the moped was traveling east when the Bogenschutz lost control for an unknown reason. The moped crashed and the Bogenschutz fell off the bike and went off the road.

Police said the moped ended up in the travel lane of Baseline Road.

Bogenschutz was pronounced dead at the scene. They believe he may have been dead an hour before a passing motorist struck his moped in the road. Deputies said after calling 911 to report they had struck an abandoned moped they called back a short time later and said they found Bogenschutz on the side of the road.

They told dispatchers they were unsure if Bogenschutz was alive.

Officers said Bogenschutz appeared to have suffered severe head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

Investigators said no other vehicles appeared to be involved in the crash. The moped did not have any indications it had been struck prior to the crash.

The coroner’s officer will conduct an autopsy to determine and exact manner and cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation.
