DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) A man driving north on I-69 with two children ran off after he was stopped by a Dekalb County Sheriff’s Deputy early Friday morning.
The traffic stop took place near mile marker 334. According to police, the driver, Steven R. Nolen, Jr., got out of his vehicle and ran off, crossing both the north and southbound lanes before entering a field.
One officer involved in the stop stayed with the children and a second officer took off after Nolen.
Officers with the Waterloo Marshal’s Office, the Auburn Police Department, the Butler Police Department and the Indiana State Police were called in to set up a perimeter.
An Auburn officer and his K-9 began tracking Nolen who was found in a ditch filled with water. Police say Nolen was actually hiding under the water when he was captured.
Nolen was taken into custody and faces two counts of Neglect of a Dependent, four various felony counts related to drug possession, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor count of driving while suspended.
The two children were place in the care of the Department of Children Services and later released to their mother.
