WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Purdue professor is developing a program to help students with physical disabilities have the career they want after graduation.

From College to Careers is a program intended to develop the technology to allow students with physical disabilities to have careers in the the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program will use robots controlled by voice commands and hand gestures to assist disabled students and researchers in laboratories.

Program leader Brad Duerstock said the program continues to grow each year.

“An area that is going to be expanded upon is assistive robotics,” Duerstock said. “Specifically, helping those people with disabilities has a wide range of usage — for daily living as well as allow them to participate in lab experimentation.”

Duerstock said he hopes the program will inspire students with disabilities to pursue careers in research fields.
