Gunman gets away with cash in Harlan bank robbery

HARLAN, Ind. (WANE) – Police responded to an armed robbery at IAB Financial at 17505 State Road 37 just after 9 a.m. on Monday.

A man with a black handgun entered the bank around 9 a.m. and made out with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Allen County Sheriff Department spokesperson Corporal Jeremy Tinkel.

Police described the suspect as a very thin white man who appeared to be anywhere from 20 to 35 years old. Police said he had on a black face mask during the robbery and a blue button down shirt.

The suspect was seen getting into a white two-door car that had a driver waiting in it. Police said they took off in the direction of Spencerville Road.

“Obviously we have officers all around searching. We’ve notified Defiance, Ohio, Indiana State Police have been notified. So, when we have a situation like this, we basically try to saturate, spread out, see if we can’t possibly locate this vehicle,” Tinkel said.

There were no injuries in the incident.

According to Karen J. Cameron, IAB Executive Vice President, there were four to five employees in the bank at the time of the robbery. Cameron could not say if they were customers in the building at the time. She did say that employees undergo yearly training to learn how to handle a robbery situation.

The FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force was at the scene investigating along with county police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Allen County Sheriff’s Department at (260) 449-3000 or call Crime Stoppers at 436-STOP.
