Eating competition to benefit charities

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Union will battle it out against employees from Five Star Distributing in a burger eating contest.

The competition isn’t just to enjoy some juicy burgers, but to raise money for charity, as part of Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill’s fourth annual nationwide Burger Battle.

Christina Covey with Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, who is hosting the competition and Michael Dennison, a team member for Five Star Distributing joined NewsChannel 15′s Gina Glaros and Rob Lydick on First News Sunday to discuss the competition.

The team that eats each burger the fastest wins. Proceeds will benefit the winner’s charity.

Five Star Distributing is competing for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Fort Wayne Professional Firefighters Union is competing for Fallen Heroes.

The teams hope to raise at least $30,000.

The fastest team in the country will receive an additional cash donation from Smokey Bones of $5,000. Second and third place nationwide winners will receive an additional $2,500 and $1,000 for their charities.

If you’re interested in cheering on the contestants, the competition is Wednesday, June 18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Smokey Bones on Apple Glen Boulevard. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
