Indiana tops Kentucky 83-70 in girls All-Star game

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Ana Owens scored 26 points to lead the Indiana girls All-Star basketball team to an 83-70 win over Kentucky on Friday night.

Owens, a University of Cincinnati signee, made 9 of 15 field goals and scored 10 in the second half as Indiana pulled away from its border rival. Indiana led 42-35 at halftime.

“You could tell early she had that little bounce to her,” Indiana coach Eric Thornton said. “She can slow up on a dime and she can get to the rim. She’s just so skilled in every way possible.”

Whitney Jennings, Indiana’s Miss Basketball and an Iowa signee, added 21 points.

Owens said her motivation was simply getting the win. Thornton called the backcourt tandem of Owens and Jennings a “two-headed monster.”

“We wanted to beat Kentucky on their floor,” Owens said. “My parents traveled three and a half hours (to the game) and I didn’t want to waste their time or the coaches’ time. We all traveled this far not to lose.”

Javonna Layfield led Kentucky with 18 points. Danielle Lawrence followed with 13, Eriel McKee scored 12 and Kentucky Miss Basketball and Western Kentucky University signee Ivy Brown finished with 10 points.

The home and home series resumes Saturday night in Indianapolis. Indiana, which had lost four of the previous five games in the series, split with Kentucky last year.
