MONTICELLO, Ind. (AP) — Indiana Beach officials say new rides are getting raves from visitors as the northern Indiana attraction focuses on moving beyond questions about its future.

The Monticello amusement park is preparing to celebrate its 88th anniversary this weekend with cake, balloons, ride discounts and food contests.

The longtime attraction is about six years into new ownership that followed decades of leadership from the Spackman family. Community officials who rely on the nearly $60 million the facility pumps into the local economy each year had expressed concerns about the new owners, citing layoffs of non-seasonal employees and unpaid utility bills.

Don Hurd, vice president of marketing for Indiana Beach, told the Pharos-Tribune ( ) that park officials are focused on growth and the future.

“We’re looking very positively and optimistic about this year and years to come,” Hurd said.

The park has added seven new rides this season, six of which are already open. The seventh, called The Viper, is still being completed.

“The feedback from the park guests has been very positive,” Hurd said. “They really like all the new rides, especially the variety of rides. We have anywhere from real rides down to kiddie rides, and they really enjoy the variety we’ve added to the park.”

Indiana Beach first opened in 1926 as Ideal Beach on Lake Shafer. In 1945, Thomas Spackman took over, changing the name to Indiana Beach seven years later.
