FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)- Dozens of soldiers returned to Fort Wayne on Black Hawk helicopters Thursday morning.

They’re part of the 293rd Infantry Regiment, which just finished two weeks of yearly training at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, Indiana.

During its time in central Indiana, the group performed weapons qualifications and practiced missions for wartime operations.

When the soldiers returned home off Cook Road via Black Hawk helicopter Thursday, they got the hero’s welcome they deserved from awaiting supporters.

“It’s great to see the support and to have someone shake your hand and say ‘Hey, even though you haven’t been gone that long, it’s nice to have you back’,” said Zachery Hackett, a member of the 293rd.

Over the last decade and a half, the 293rd has had deployments to places like Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
