CELINA, Ohio (WANE) – A Fort Wayne man died and five others were injured in a head-on crash in Mercer County, Ohio. It happened around 11:45 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 33 between Palmer Road and U.S. Route 127.
Police said Adam Hamilton, 26, of Fort Wayne, was driving west on U.S. 33 in a 2013 Nissan. Joshua Angel, 35, of Fort Wayne, was driving east on U.S. 33 in a 2003 Volvo. His wife and three children were in the car with him. Investigators said Hamilton tried to pass a semi truck just west of the Palmer Road intersection.
Hamilton and Angel both tried to avoid hitting each other and swerved into the ditch to the south of the road. Their vehicles ended up hitting head-on in the ditch. Everyone had on seat belts and the front and side airbags in both vehicles did deploy.
Rockford EMS took Hamilton to Van Wert County Hospital and he was then flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, where he died from his injuries around 4:30 p.m.
Angel, his wife Christine, 34, and his children, Ellijah, 4, Jonah, 5, and Isaac, 8, were taken to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Mary’s. The parents were then flown to PRMC in Fort Wayne. They were both listed in critical condition as of Saturday night. The children’s conditions were not released.
U.S. 33 was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was cleaned up.
