FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Huntington North, Leo, and Eastside are all moving on to semi-state this weekend while Norwell saw its softball season come to an end Tuesday night at regionals.
Huntington North punched a ticket to semi-state by winning 4-0 at Carroll. University of Kentucky signee Erin Rethlake was dominant on the mound for the Vikings, striking out 11 while yielding just two hits in a complete game victory. Huntington North improves to 23-5 and advances to play Crown Point at semi-state this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lafayette Harrison. Carroll ends the season 26-4 overall.
In 3A action at Norwell the Knights fell to Yorktown 4-2. Yorktown’s Ashley Morrow racked up an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the third to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Norwell didn’t get a hit off Grace Lumpkin until the bottom of the fifth when Alissa Hanni hit a solo shot deep to right field, cutting Yorktown’s lead to 2-1. Yorktown got the run back on a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1, but Norwell struck again in the sixth. With two runners on Caitlin Herndon doubled to right. The lead runner scored, but the second runner – which would have been the tying run – was thrown out at the plate. Yorktown tacked on an unearned run in the top of the seventh to set the final at 4-2 and advance to semi-state. Norwell finishes the season 19-9 overall.
In 3A play at Wawasee Leo high school brought home the program’s first regional title as the Lions bested the host Warriors 3-2. The Lions improve to 24-6 on the season while Wawasee ends the year at 20-11. Leo will now face Hanover Central at 1 p.m. in semi-state action at Twin Lakes this Saturday.
Eastside advanced to semi-state with a 2-1 regional win at Bremen in regional play. The Blazers improve to 28-4 on the season. Eastside now plays Elwood at 11 a.m. Saturday at semi-state at Eastern (Greentown).
