U.S. 24 back open after crash in Paulding Co., 1 dead

PAULDING COUNTY, Ohio (WANE) – One person died in a two vehicle crash in Paulding County Thursday afternoon.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Harvey Bok, 66, Defiance, was southbound on County Road 143 when he field to yield to an oncoming eastbound vehicle driven by Gary Lipp, 66, Paulding.

Bok’s pickup truck turned into the path of Lipp’s SUV and was struck on the passenger side. Lipp suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. Bok refused medical treatment at the scene.

Lipp’s front passenger, Janice Lipp, 67, Paulding, was critically injured and taken by air ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

95-year-old Karl Werling died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to the state highway patrol. Werling was seated in the rear of the SUV on the driver’s side.

Officials closed U.S. 24 near the Defiance-Paulding County line for about four hours while crews investigated and cleaned up debris.

The crash remains under investigation.
