Fire damages building at Old Fort

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fire damaged a building at the Old Fort Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Old Fort at 5:59 a.m. and found one building fully engulfed in flames.

Fire crews had the flames extinguished in 12 minutes.

The small building is still standing, but burn marks are clearly visible. Fire personnel removed badly burned items from the building.

According to the release from the Fire Department, it was the former blacksmith building that was damaged. Many of the tools and equipment in the building were destroyed in the fire.

Investigators and officials from the parks department are investigating the damage.

Historic Fort Wayne posted about the fire on the organization’s Facebook Page, saying:

“The building had not been in use since May 18, and is not wired for electricity. We don’t have any answers yet as to how this started. We just have to wait for the investigation. We are so grateful for the support and encouragement we are receiving!”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.The Fort Wayne Parks Dept., Neighborhood Code, and the
FWPD assisted at the scene.
