COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WANE)  Firefighters in Whitley County battled a house fire on Monday afternoon.

Columbia City house fireDispatchers sent fire crews to a fully-engulfed house fire at State Road 9 and County Road 50 East before 2 p.m. on Monday.

The homeowner was not home at the time, but the owner’s cousin told NewsChannel 15 that firefighters were able to rescue a turtle from inside the house.

There was also a dog in a kennel outside the home. Firefighters had to move the dog to safety, away from the smoke.

A cat and duck were also apparently outside the home and the owner’s cousin said they were okay.

How the fire started and the extent of the damage done to the home is not yet known. provides commenting on many stories to allow for constructive discussion.
